In 1521, Haut-Brion became the first Bordeaux Cru designated by the name of its terroir, and no longer by that of its owner or parish, making the property the first Grand Vin in the world and led it to obtain the rare distinction of Premier Grand Cru Classé in the 1855 Classification. It is the only cru outside the Médoc to be retained in this prestigious classification.
